Here we go again! GM in Australia's food.

Just heard that Bayer has applied in all commercial canola growing regions of Australia to release GM canola.

What?

You read correctly - all commercial canola growing regions of Australia!

Our local shire (Donnybrook-balingup) decides again tonight  if they are to allow this to take place in the shire.

The meeting is at 5.00pm tonight at council chambers in Donnybrook.

Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) have already approved the use of GM canola and products derived from GM canola in food for human and animal use.

Has all the world gone insane?

A precedent has been set - This one's for Steve Marsh!

This precedent could interest a few people.
A US court has ruled that an organic farm can claim damages for losses caused by GM particulate matter and it's associated herbicides and pesticides.
This links for you, Steve, hope it helps!

Here's the problem

For those people who don't know what all the fuss is about with GM maybe this can help :

"It is now virtually impossible for a U.S. farmer to grow crops of their choosing (corn, soybeans, canola, etc.) and remain GMO-free because of the numerous biological and human means by which seeds can spread." - Grow-Switch site.

We have the chance to Stop GM in WA now before it pollutes too much and we chould nip it in the bud now before it's too late.We need a complete ban on GM crops and research in Australia. Stop GM - we don't need to follow the US and learn the terrible lesson again!

Make Terry eat GM!

Oh, that's just great! The office of the electoral distribution commisioners has just proposed to change the electoral boundaries so that we will then have the state agriculture minister Terry Redman as our local MP. This is the man who while head of the Department of Agriculture (and head of the Ag College at Denmark) decided to let GM into the state.

The shire of Donnybrook-Balingup will go into his electorate.

I, for one, won't be voting for you Terry. In fact why don't you go on a GM Only diet and we can see how long you live for since it's supposedly safe. Also since you made the decision to let it into WA how about you take on some of the liability for any cleanup bill for our environment while you're at it!

Science lagging as usual

A fair bit of science seems to being repressed over the whole GM issue. This is understandable as it takes time to build up a body of evidence and GM companies want to get their commercial interest through to control our food. It's such a shame that scientists wait so long for the "proof'. I always thought that the precautionary principle was a part of science not an emotional add-on after everyone else proves it. You know, maybe there's some things that seem a little stupid that perhaps we just shouldn't do!

Good,no great, news for a change!

We'll be keeping an eye out for the results of this. The Public Patent Foundation on the behalf of 60 family farms, seed companies and organic organizations is taking Monsanto to court. Go Pubpat and FTCLDF!

Don't be fooled!

Just reading this post from the Sydney Morning Herald.http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/seed-sleuth-on-hunt-for-daily-eternal-bread/2007/08/06/1186252631485.html.

Despite what Dr Street says - We haven't been eating GM food for 10,000 years!

This is almost lying - GM technology has only been around since methods of recombining DNA (gene shears etc) have been around - 1973 I make it - see wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genetic_engineering.

Got to remember this guys funding source is the grains industry. See our previous article on the GRDC too. Figure it out for yourself.

I don't think this guy's any sort of hero, possibly the reverse. Save us! Save us, save us now!
Sorry, I thought I heard open pollinated seeds calling.
